Handball

In 1959 Armenian Federation of Handball was established. Handball became widely spread in all the regions of Armenia. It was practiced in YPI, too.

In 1965-66 men`s “Polytechnic” Handball Team became the champion of Armenia for the first time and gained the right to participate in group “A” competition of the Soviet Union. In 1985-86, that is twenty years later, the “Polytechnic” Team regained the champion’s title.

For many years our men’s and women’s teams have participated in the competitions of Armenia, in the All-union Students’ Games and taken the tops; two times-champion of Armenia, the second prize–11 times, third prize - 6 times, champion of the Students’ Games - 8 times.

The “Polytechnic” Sport Club has trained 24 Candidates for Master of Sports, over 100 first - category sportsmen. Not only our students but also instructors of the chair, including Valentine Kasyan, Sergey Minasyan, Artavazd Yesayan, Ararat Matevosyan and Mamikon Ter-Avagyan, Baregam Gabrielyan,Armen Arshakyan, Sergey Grigiryan, Arkady Yogynov, Mkrtich Hakobyan, Garik Manoukyan, Rafik Martirosyan have greatly contributed to this.
